Quick, Parent-Friendly (and Free!) Printable Addition Facts Test

How well does your child know the addition facts? Use this quick, printable, and free addition facts test to find out. Bonus: the detailed answer key will help you interpret the assessment results so you can help your child master all the math facts!

What are the Addition Facts?

The addition facts are the sums from 1+1 up to 9+9. It’s essential that children master these sums, because they’re the foundation for the rest of elementary arithmetic. Without thorough mastery of the addition facts, your child will struggle as he tackles subtraction, word problems, and problems with bigger numbers. He’ll use so much of his working memory on simple calculations he’ll have little brain space left for understanding new concepts. This leads to solving problems more slowly, making more mistakes, and an overall lack of confidence in math.

How Fast Should My Child Know the Addition Facts?

Immediately is best, but it depends a lot on your child. Children who process information very quickly are quite capable of knowing each fact in less than 1 second, but children who are slower processors may always need a few seconds. As a general rule, aim for no more than 3 seconds per fact, without counting to find the answer. (Why no counting? Learn more here.)

When Should My Child Master the Addition Facts?

Ideally, children should master the addition facts in first grade or at the beginning of second grade so they’re well-prepared to tackle second-grade math topics like word problems and multi-digit addition. But, if your older child hasn’t mastered the addition facts, it’s not too late. No matter how old your child is, learning the addition facts will make her more confident and successful in math.

  1. Hi Kate, I’ve tried to get these assessments 3 times now, but haven’t been successful. I’ve checked my spam and junk mail so not sure what’s going on. Any ideas?

  2. Very weird, Courtney! Sorry for the hassle. Send me an email at the contact form above (and let me know what email address you used), and I’ll see if I can figure it out.

  3. Have worked it out now – you need to click on the large area underneath. Then you put in more details and it works.

  4. Hi all, sorry you were having trouble downloading the assessment! As Meredith said, just click on the blue rectangle with the picture of the assessment and you’ll be prompted for your email address.

If you continue to have trouble, please send me an email at my contact form (under About in the menu above), and I’ll email it to you directly.

    Happy Math!

  5. I’ve followed your directions and clicked on the blue box. But it won’t allow me to enter any information so I can’t leave my email address.

  6. I’ve followed your directions and clicked on the blue box. But it won’t allow me to enter any information so I can’t leave my email address. I would appreciate the addition assessments.

  7. I’ve clicked on all 4 different assessments and entered my email and have only received the multiplication test. Would you please send me the addition, subtraction, and division as well? Thank you!

  8. Hi all,

Sorry that this page is still acting so glitch-y. I’ve added click-able text above that may work better.

I’m more than happy to email the assessments to you directly, but I can’t do that unless I have your email address (and leaving a comment doesn’t provide me with your email address–which is good for privacy, but not for getting you the printable!) Please click on About in the top menu, then Contact, and send me a one-sentence email letting me know your email address and which assessment you’d like. Then, I’ll be able to get it you.

    Happy Math!

  9. Thought you might like to know, I was able to receive my assessment test and download it just fine.
I went in and double checked and the file opened just fine and there was no corruption of the data – everything was visible and usable.
    Thank you for the test.
