Preschool Math Activity: Fingers Up, Fingers Down

This simple finger game helps your preschooler learn to recognize quantities and identify combinations that equal 5. All you need is your hands!

One of my favorite activities in Preschool Math at Home is Fingers Up, Fingers Down. It’s great for helping kids learn to recognize quantities up to 5, as well as the combinations that make 5 (4 and 1, 3 and 2, 5 and 0). It’s perfect for when you’re waiting somewhere and need to keep your preschooler entertained, since you don’t need any special materials.

Here’s a video (starring my daughter) that demonstrates this simple game.

  1. Hi Kate! I was an elementary teacher for 10 years before staying home to homeschool my children. I am obsessed with your curriculum!! I don’t feel like I need to change anything! So thankful I don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
